Final selection of work for assessment

During hangout review with the tutor, we have went through all the works so far and below is the selection that i will send for the assessment. As we noticed in the guidelines there is no specified number of works to be submitted but in general i have too many at the moment so some works will remain on the blog but will not be sent. All of them can be seen in the video installation.


As my parallel project was closely related and inspired by the course as a whole, all works create a cohesive submission that will complement each other and will make a final body of work.

Of course If i had a different space i would have attached 2D works to the walls instead with more space around them and the sculptures would be placed on individual stands so the viewer could walk around. But overall i feel that works work together and create a cohesive body of work inspired by the course and personal experimentation.

Parallel project overview and works together.

My parallel project based on Found images, intuitive painting/drawing and sculptures that are inspired from the works made during the course.


Initially i have got inspired by the first part and the first assignment piece based on enlargement of an image(sketch).  As the course progressed  i got interested in the new approaches, techniques and the idea of “looking” for images, which still relates to enlargement of lines and shapes but goes beyond initial imagery. Parallel project as a whole was inspired and “found” in the work that was done during the course, and i feel that this connection is visible in the body of work together.

Each work took a period of time to develop, some are still “work in progress” – i do not want to rush and “finish” a piece , i am working on “finding” and “sculpting” it out and this can take some time. I believe that my Parallel project will continue to develop and some works will be changed later and/or modified – and this is a part of the idea of “finding” a work through process and connection/conversation with the piece through time.

I found inspiration and images to develop in my works and intuitively allowed images to come out through process, conversation between my imagination and experimentation. Of course research into other artists work  planted a few seeds but i found my own way of growing them and making the works my own. I enjoyed working in this manner and feel that my voice is starting to come through.


Artists  i “met” during research and the way they work varied from abstract  to making things, combining both and approaching the process totally intuitively. As a result of this my work took quite a turn and the resulted combination of works was inspired by the research, my own practice during the course and personal discoveries. 

I tried to look at artists and get inspired , not imitate someone but find my own way of doing and extracting my own inner voice.

Some of the artists i have got inspired by ( during this course as well as ones before):

Robert Motherwell for example inspires me with his use of line and economy of colour. He used variety of tools to make intuitive and free marks in his linear paintings/drawings.

Jean-Michel Basquiat approach was very emotional and expressive, to some degree  almost child like manner of depicting a subject, but visually complicated and engaging. Combination of words line and colour created an explosion of emotions and artists experiences. One must look closer to see more in his work – and find new every time one looks.

Barbara Hepworth – her sculptures inspired me to look closer and extract 3 dimensional shapes/forms out of my own drawings, as if letting the line out for a walk in to the world.

Gina Stepaniuk – her works are inspired by nature and processes around us. It resonates with me and i have implemented this in my works for assignment 5.

Rudy Earnst – free form artist, working using gesture and allowing the forms to come out during the process – looking at his work confirmed my feelings that engagement with the process is as important as the result if not more.

Antony Gormley – his site specific installations and use of his own body as a model.  The scale some of his works really take my breath away, the overall mass/size of the sculptures and the way it fits in the landscape creates a new perspective of the place they are in.

Leonardo Da Vinci – artist that never stopped looking.. My favourite quote ( as they say) – “If you look long enough at the wall the images will start to appear” works for me in a way that ” one should never stop looking , something will find it’s way out and all one need is to  is grab it and make it work” I mean that inspiration is all around us and as long as we look it will come.

Pavel Tchelitchew – his work can be quite dark but extremely creative, skill-full and engaging. Works where he combined imagery/shapes etc.. correlates with my idea of “found images” in this project.

Francis Picabia – i was really taken by the way he used line and colour to create a multi layered compositions, describe shapes,  forms, volume and tell a story. In a way this influenced the idea of placing my works next or/ and in-front of each other to create a layered composition as a group.

Louise Bourgeois – her enlarged sculptures that derived from the drawings she made. I can relate to this connection and idea of making a flat linear drawing into a solid three dimensional object. I find this very engaging, stimulating personally and see how  the work can become art of the viewers experience by sharing the space both occupy.

The works i have created for Parallel project are quite different, but i feel that they work as one organism that creates a cohesive group when viewed together.

There are a few canvasses – some still “works in progress” as i have explained in previous post, because they take time to develop and “come out” but i believe this is a part of the project. Some works are drawings on paper and some became sculptures – they walked out of the works done during the course and became solid.

I feel that the parallel project is a work in progress as well as a continuous work of discovery through process, combination and connection between visual and imaginative.

How to display them together? I am thinking of creating an installation , probably in my conservatory, where i can put works together and make a short video as i will not be able to send sculptures as some of them are quite heavy and tall.. I’m working on it at the moment..

Assignment 4 and parallel project sculpture

I used Paint 3D to superimpose the sculpture inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci drawing on to a landscape. I walk with my dogs in this fields , it is quite open and i feel that helps to show how the sculpture might look if it was done on a larger scale. I like the contrast here between the white of the sculpture and natural colours on nature.


below is another one with figures, but i’m not sure if it works as well but it shows the possible scale.

Assignment 3 and Parallel Project sculptures 4 “Free Forms”

Apart from some changes that i have tried to do to the assignment pieces i followed up with the parallel project idea of found images and making them into solid subjects.

Because this assignment was about gesture, movement, engagement with the process and “unexpected” (to some extend) results i found quite a few linear shapes and forms within the works.

I must say that it was not easy to decide what to change in the works, feeling of making it worse creeps in even though there is a want to make it better. I have made some changes to the larger “self portrait painting – well, it definitely changed… I have stopped amending it as i feel that i need to have a “conversation” with it later in order to feel what else to do here or not?  I have used more media ( pastels, inks, acrylics, different tools and so on) and also during the process found” another me in it , sort of coming out from the left side of the picture plain.  I feel like this “self portrait” is my own journey to discovery and experimentation I’ve been going through during the course.  In the future i will come to work on it again, with more to add or erase but i have stopped as it needs a rest for a bit. To some extend this work was edited after being inspired by looking at some works by Francis Picabia “Transparencies” where he uses overlayed linear images to create a complexity and depth.

There is a possibility of Cropping it out and one of the possible frames is below, i will decide after discussing it with my tutor. It is on a canvass so i might leave for now)

Then it was two more drawings performing to music – i am still “looking” but not “doing” in regards of changing the overall drawing. I’m going to have a “conversation” with them and see if i can ..

But what happened so far after some time of looking at the works – i have found quite a few interesting shapes and forms that beginning to be translated into 3D forms. This sculptures inspired by the marks made during the process, as well as the final result plus the actual music that was played during the process.

I am using stronger wire that can support itself better and only a small amount of plaster, plaster cloth or none at all in order to capture the “fragile” “sensitive” quality of the lines/marks and flowing music. I hope to achieve sculptures that will mimic this gestural element of mark making along with some movement that vibrates the air while the music is being played. Ambitious, yes, but extremely interesting and rewarding process.

Parallel Project. Found Images – Sculptures 3, Assignment 2

Continuing with the sculptures. This one is to complement Assignment 2 drawings of plants. In the previous posts i have explained the process of making the sculpture using wire, plaster, newsprint, tape, wood, plaster of Paris etc.

In this sculpture i have omitted the use of heavy plaster to bulk it – main reason is because the object derived from the final drawing of Agapanthus and i wanted it to be more linear. Also i really enjoyed how it moved while deciding on the placement. I believe it works better being light and movable. I also used dried poppy seed heads at the end of the wire.

In order to keep it steady and retain shape i attached it to a piece of board ( this was too flexible and i had to glue another one for extra support). Initially i wanted to use watered down Plaster of Paris to cover the wire and make it white – but during the process came upon a few difficulties. One of them is that liquid did not want to stick to wire and kept running off – this and overall observation of the sculpture made me change my mind. I decided to keep it as wire – i am going to try and spray paint it silver later ( never done this before so will see how it goes).

I used remaining plaster to create textured surface on the board itself – this will add some interest and will help with the shadow creation as a backdrop ( as an idea anyway).

For some reason the plaster isn’t drying!! it’s been a week… as i touch the surface it feels soft and crumbly, falling off and definitely not transportable if has to be sent off for assessment.. However i do like how plaster appears on wire – hit and miss, in a way resembling how natural plants dry in the wild – not at the same pace, some areas could be decomposing ( darker) faster than others.

Using Binder i have covered the plaster and hope for it to harden before spraying. It may need a few more coats , but this is where it is at the moment. A few short videos with it being shown from all angles.

Assignment 1 and Parallel Project sculpture 2

The sculpture was made as part of the Parallel Project (intuitive/ found images) .


Using Assignment 1 drawing and preparatory studies i have made a new sketch that combines all off the above using line to create a shape.  This shape was used to make a 3D “drawing” using some wire that was attached to a cut slice of wood – the shape of the wood was chosen as i feel it benefits the overall structure ( irregular and in a way that mimics some of the angles);  then i used plaster mix and newsprint to build it up, working slowly in order to retain the shape without collapsing. During the process i had to support the structure using wire attached to the ceiling, also  strips of hessian was used for extra support and to get some texture – I deliberately left some of it showing even after plaster of Paris was later washed over. After the whole shape was build and let to dry i used diluted mix of plaster of Paris and a large brush structure was covered to make it white as i wanted in the beginning.

As an idea the sculpture envisaged to be much larger – perhaps 20-30 feet – so people could walk beneath and around it as if between large trees, and when the gaze would be directed upwards the connected circle would create a window to the sky and help to connect the viewer with the space by creating a boundary for the eye ( as if sky was “falling” on to the person or a personal window to the above etc). This is why i wanted the structure to be white – it will reflect the colours around it but still creates breaks/borders/edges between spaces and the views.

Parallel Project. Found Images – Sculptures 1


As i started to look back and think how to get everything together, improve or rework some of the works for assignments i came to conclusion that apart from all the changes i need to make the work cohesive and somehow make it all work as one unit.

One of the works i am looking at is the part 4 “installation” – one reason is to take into account my tutors recommendations of how best to present the work as well as making better images. I am thinking of making a printed images that would work as one – triptych of front and side views.

Along side i’m continuing the research and incidentally came across an old documentary ( on BBC 4) about Barbara Hepworth sculptures. I have came across her works before and have seen some of her drawings in the gallery couple of years ago. The documentary ewoke my interest in developing drawing into a more solid 3D image – using materials i have around me. This sort of direction i used in my previous course and decided to go along with my instinct and let it work out. This goes along with the Parallel Project – found images and intuitive application.

Using Assignment 4 as inspiration, in particular the drawing of a horse by Leonardo da Vinci, i began implementing the idea using materials i had.

I feel that wire in a way replicates the line but in solid form – tactile but still quite light and can be used to recreate variety of marks/lines/curves etc.

The overall idea is to use already made drawings/paintings and “Find” images/forms that can be constructed into a solid structure.

Using wood cuts as base and variety of wire i had at hand i started to make a form inspired by the drawing of the horse and research about Barbara Hepworth sculptures. The idea here is to use the drawing but make a form that is more abstract and evolves itself.

Originally i started the sculpture that had two “legs” just as the 2d drawing. During the process i came upon a problem – it was not stable and kept collapsing or moving too much. I do like that wire creates movement in sculpture and perhaps can implement the form later by using a stronger materials and soldering iron – but i do not have it at this point.

Also i would like to mention that i am working on a small scale – i would like to imagine this works being larger, perhaps 20-30 feet tall …. again i have no means of doing this, and working on smaller scale is the only way. I do hope that it is possible to imagine how these works could look perhaps in a large field working with the landscape around it,  and on a scale that would allow people to walk amongst them.

I haven’t done this before and came across a few problems but the main thing i am finding ways of overcoming them and learning so much along the way.

Materials i have at hand at the moment – newspapers, shredded paper, old cloth, plaster and wire.

Using paper and tape i started by adding more “flesh” to the wire – here i found out that as i added materials the structure started changing and/or collapsing, especially when i started to add plaster.  The solution  here was to attach a long wire to the ceiling and use it as a support for the structure while plaster is drying. I am adding/covering the structure slowly part by part moving upwards trying to balance the weight.

I want the sculpture to be white at the end, so some of the ideas how to achieve this – use plaster of Paris at the later stage, paint it over with white etc. Why? Because i want to use the structure and light to create shadows on the space around it. This will be done later.

Below is the sculpture number one in progress, a smaller one that it developing itself along side and a third one that is based on assignment 1 drawing ( enlarged forms of mushrooms and plants).


summary: I’m hoping to create a few sculptures that will be inspired by works created during the course but will grow out of “found” images/lines within those works , hence creating a new work of it’s own but together they and drawings will create a cohesive “organism” that will be presented as an Installation that will include Parallel project and course work as one.


Partly the idea was inspired by works of Barbara Hepworth and Antony Gormley.

B. Hepworth used nature and places she visited to create sketches that later became solid forms that fitted naturally into the environment. Her sculptures feel organic even though she used quite hard materials – stone, metal, wood. This was achieved by (in my opinion) really connecting with the space prior to making – i can see how she replicated and implied the natural curves and textures into her sculptures. I tried to use this idea in my sculptures – even though the shapes are quite abstract i have tried to use nature as inspiration for shapes and forms. I also love the idea of the viewer to be able to look through the sculpture and see the space around it as if from a window or a frame , this creates a personal experience and connection with the work and space.

Works of A. Gormley (some) on the other hand to some extend overtake the space they occupy , still very organically and as if they belong there but mostly they appear to invade it , make it their own. Saying that i find his sculptures and the scale very inspirational and would love to visit the locations to experience this power of man-made over nature. While B. Hepworth found inspiration and shapes in nature A.Gormley finds his forms by using his own body, but both indeniably combine the world and imagination to create a new form of life in solid form.  At the moment i haven’t got resources and space to create something on such scale but as an idea i have superimposed the imagery onto landscape to get a feeling how my work might look on a large scale.








Parallel project. Abstract intuitive painting – changing time


This work changed quite a lot during the process – over a few weeks between drying i have added elements, reduced or took some out, reworked it completely using layers and the result worked out itself, which is a part of the “intuitive painting and finding an Image” concept of the project.

At this moment in time i am quite happy with the result – textures and variety of media used create a vortex and movement, in a way relating themselves to the clock that found itself in the painting – passing time and constant change.


The process:

  1. A1 sheet of bockingford watercolour paper, acrylic inks, watercolour and water.
  2. Using a plastic sheet the whole area was covered to create some texture then left to dry; following with a layer of binder.
  3. After drying i was not happy with the colour saturation and overall effect – just too washed out- i used acrylic incs to add more colour, following with plastic over the top again. What I’ve learned here is that inks tend to stick to plastic instead of the support – perhaps because of the binder being too smooth, not sure.
  4. In a few days of looking for shapes i decided to go with geometric shapes/patterns. I thing it was becase most of the textures were very soft and reminded me of the space or moving water. I used cut out pieces of card ( different shape and sizes) and soft pastels to begin my search for composition and intuitively arrive at something that would feel right
  5. Even though it was looking interesting i was not really feeling the piece – where was it going? Making an executive decision I over-painted it again and added more texture.
  6.  A few hours of staring at the result after it has dried…  Next day sun came out and as i walked through the garden the dazzle of plants gave me idea – using sticks, pallet knives and other tools i began applying paint (gold, bronze, metallic red, silver) using gesture movements. To add more sparkle i used glitter glue ( red, gold, blue) and then black and pearl linear marks were added. then it was left to dry overnight.
  7. That morning I was watching a documentary about Moe Brooker “Painting joy” and it helped me to decide what to do next. I added lines, shapes, more colour using markers, pastels, paint and inktense sticks until i felt it was right.
  8. As I’ve said earlier I am quite happy with the result at this moment in time and that is why i have stopped. Is it completely finished? – time will tell but for now it is finished. I feel that there is more than one format that the work can be viewed but i feel the one below works best at the moment.

Moe Brooker, Painting Joy

Parallel project. Abstract intuitive painting – Day and Night

Initially i used bright colours to cover the canvass later i got inspired by my garden and Californian poppies that bring joy and colour even on a  grey summer day. So the imagery found it’s way intuitively through process.


I kept voice notes during making of this piece as well as a few other, as i worked on a few projects at the same time. This one got finished first. I also written about it in Part 5 Project 4 Time and the viewer.


  1. Paint was applied using pallet knives, brushes and other tools i had to make marks and create textured underpainting .
  2. In a few days – I used charcoal to add some flowers, it was not the initial idea but it found it’s way in i suppose because of the colours used and the garden itself.
  3. Using diluted paint i applied darker colours trying to leave some of the flowers uncovered. Then i used white spirit ( i really like this technique) to create textures, following by plastic over the top.
  4. I was pleased that some of the flowers retained initial colour and was really happy with the texture that was created around.
  5. White chalk was used to add more shapes – then i stopped and decided to add white paint using brush and stippling technique to paint the negative space.
  6. As i progressed the decision worked out – in order not to make it completely covered like a mosaic i found a new solution – only cover half to create contrast and interest . Diagonal was chosen – i believe it works here as a curtain, or a mountain or a division between “Dark and Light” , “Day and Night” and creates a more dinamic composition.

I’m happy with it , the only thing is i might add more silver paint to the white area ( just as i did in the bottom left corner) – it brightens up the white and takes away the dullness of the opacity of it.


Some of the techniques and working ideas were inspired by the artist i have came across earlier in this course – Gina Stepaniuk. She uses world around her to find inspiration and “finds” imagery (composition, end result etc.) through direct engagement with the process. In the video below one can see some of her working methods and techniques. She also talk about her painting process and how she comes to the finished work by finding her way through chaos and being an alchemist that creates magic through connection with materials ( paraphrasing).
